Planning Light: How to Stay Organized Without the Overwhelm
Let’s Be Real—Summer Is a Lot
Summer is supposed to be relaxing… but let’s be honest, it’s often the most chaotic season of the year.
Between road trips, visiting family, the kids being home full-time, and juggling new routines, your perfectly color-coded planner can start to feel like a burden instead of a blessing.
That’s where Planning Light comes in.
What Is Planning Light?
Planning Light is exactly what it sounds like: it’s about scaling back your planning system to match your current bandwidth—without letting everything fall apart.
This isn’t about giving up your goals or letting the chaos win. It’s about staying grounded in the simplest way possible. It’s about grace, flexibility, and giving yourself permission to shift gears.
3 Ways to Embrace a Lighter Planning Style
Here are a few ways I personally simplify my system in seasons of life that feel especially full (like this one!).
1. Keep Tools to a Minimum
When I’m traveling (which I’ve been doing a lot this month), I don’t bring my entire planning system. I pare it down to the basics:
👉 My dot grid journal
👉 A zipper pouch with pens, sticky notes, and a few markers
👉 A larger XL zipper pouch to toss in my favorite sticker sheets and stencils
That’s it. It’s lightweight, mobile, and flexible enough for whatever comes my way. And it all fits in my tote!
2. Focus on Function Over Format
This is the season to ditch the complicated layouts and focus on what’s functional.
In my dot grid journal, I set up a simple weekly spread with just enough structure to track big events, priorities, and to-dos. The rest of the space? Totally open for jotting notes, doodling, or brain dumping as needed.
My only must-have? A Top 3 list for each day. If I know the three things that will make me feel accomplished, I can give myself permission to ignore the rest. Sometimes, I just highlight the ones that are most important so that I’m not worried about the order they’re written on the paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect!
3. Plan in Pockets of Time
In busy seasons, you might not have a solid hour to sit down and map out your week. But you do have a few 10-minute windows—use them.
-
Jot your to-dos while waiting at pickup
-
Highlight events in your planner after dinner
-
Brain dump before bed so you sleep better
Think of this as planning in sprints—quick bursts of clarity that add up to calm.
Why This Works in Real Life
Planning Light works because it’s sustainable. It meets you where you are, not where you think you “should” be.
You won’t feel behind if you skip a day. You can adapt it when your plans shift. You can toss it in your bag and take it on the go.
Most importantly, it keeps your head and heart clear during seasons when both are in high demand.
My Current Planning Light Setup
This is what I’m using for July as I travel between South Carolina and North Carolina and get ready for our conference trip later this month:
-
✨ Dot grid journal with a simple weekly layout
-
✨ Top 3 sticky notes to narrow my focus each day (check out my new fave translucent sticky notes in my amazon store! (as an amazon affiliate, I may earn on qualifying orders.)
-
✨ XL zipper pouch with stickers for motivation and color
-
✨ Small zip pouch with my go-to pens and markers (Technically, I could fit these in the XL Zipper Pouch, but I prefer it to lay flat, so I put my bulky items in a separate pouch.)
No inserts. No pressure. Just tools that help me feel calm, creative, and in control—even in a hectic season.
A Little Extra Encouragement Before You Go
Friend, planning doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. You don’t need a perfect spread or the “right” setup to be productive.
You just need to know what matters most—and build a system around that.
So if life feels a little extra this summer, I invite you to try planning light. ✨ It’s the reset your brain has been craving.
And if you’re craving even more guidance and accountability, don’t forget—our Eat That Frog book club just kicked off for this quater of 2025. It’s not too late to jump in and learn how to tackle the hard stuff (without the overwhelm).
Until next time:
Keep planning with purpose, and coordinate that chaos. 💛
