Why Rest Is Essential for a Balanced Week
Most of us don’t think about rest until we feel completely exhausted.
We push through the day, check off our to-do lists, and tell ourselves we’ll rest when everything is done.
But the truth is… everything is never really done.
And when rest becomes something we only allow ourselves after we’ve earned it, it often never happens at all.
That’s why I’ve started to look at rest differently — not as a reward, but as a necessary part of creating a balanced week.
If you’ve ever felt like you have to finish everything before you can pause, this is your reminder: rest isn’t the reward at the end. It’s part of what helps you keep going.
If this already feels a little too close to home…
I shared more about this in this week’s Monday Musings podcast — what it’s looked like for me to stop treating rest like a reward and start building it into my week instead.

The Problem with Treating Rest Like a Reward
When rest is treated like something we earn, it gets pushed to the bottom of the list.
But research shows that rest isn’t just helpful — it’s essential. Chronic stress and lack of recovery time can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and long-term health concerns.
Instead of helping you get more done, skipping rest often makes everything feel harder.
In other words, rest doesn’t take away from your productivity — it actually supports it.
How Planning Can Protect Your Rest
This is where your planner becomes more than just a place to track tasks.
It becomes a tool for creating balance.
Instead of filling every space with something to do, we can start using our planners to intentionally create margin.
Think of your planner as a place to support your life — not just organize your responsibilities.
Here are a few simple ways to start:
- Choose your top three priorities for the day so everything doesn’t feel equally urgent
- Leave white space in your planner to allow for flexibility
- Schedule rest the same way you schedule tasks — because it matters just as much
- Use a tracker to notice patterns in your energy and adjust your week accordingly
Why Rest Matters Even More During Perimenopause
If you’re in your 40s or early 50s, there’s another layer to this conversation that often goes unspoken.
Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect sleep, energy levels, focus, and stress tolerance.
Research shows that fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels can impact sleep quality, mood, and cognitive clarity. Many women experience increased fatigue, brain fog, and disrupted sleep during this stage of life.
This means your body may need more rest and recovery than it used to — and that’s completely normal.
Instead of asking, “How much can I fit into my day?” we begin asking, “What pace actually supports this season of life?”
And sometimes, the answer includes more rest than you’re used to allowing.
Practical Planning Tips for Low Energy Days
When your energy feels lower, your planner can help support you instead of overwhelm you.
Here are a few ways to adjust:
- Plan based on energy, not just time — schedule high-focus tasks when your energy is higher and lighter tasks when it’s lower
- Reduce decisions — simplify your routines, meals, and planning layouts to avoid decision fatigue
- Build in recovery blocks — short breaks, quiet time, or even a slower morning can make a big difference
Research shows that intentional rest and recovery can improve focus, performance, and overall effectiveness.
This isn’t about doing less for the sake of doing less.
It’s about doing what matters in a way that actually works for you.
Final Thoughts
Rest isn’t something you earn at the end of the day.
It’s something that supports you through it.
When you start planning for rest, you create a rhythm that feels sustainable — not overwhelming.
And that’s where real balance begins.
Friend, you don’t have to wait until everything is done to take a breath.
You’re allowed to build a life that includes it.
