Developing a Planning Mindset

Developing a planning mindset is key to finding a successful planning system.

So let’s first remember WHY you might want to be building a planning system. Here are a few benefits of planning:

  • increased productivity,
  • reduced stress,
  • better time management, and
  • increased clarity on goals and priorities.

These are some of the reasons that you might want to start planning, and it’s important to keep those reasons in mind when things get a little tough or feel hard as you’re starting your planning journey. What are some other benefits that you could see from adding planning into your life? Drop them in the comments section and let’s see what else you come up with.

Having the right mindset is crucial to being successful at planning. How do you currently think about planning? Is it a chore to be done or do you look forward to your planning time? I want to encourage you, especially if you are someone who is struggling to actually implement planning into your life, to adopt a growth mindset. That means having the belief that your abilities and skills can be developed through dedication and hard work.

How do you envision yourself planning in the future? Do you think it will always be something you dread, or do you see yourself falling in love with the process?

If this is all still new to you, I recommend that you start small and build up your planning habits gradually. We will be talking more about this later in a future article, but try incorporating just one planning habit into your daily routine. Maybe that’s writing a to-do list or spending a few minutes first thing in the morning to schedule your day in advance. Consistency is super important and making planning a regular part of their routine will help you find success. Tell me in the comments what planning habit you can commit to implementing today.

Now let’s be realistic. You aren’t going to be a planner queen overnight. Hello, I am still learning better ways to organize my life too! So keep in mind that setting realistic goals and expectations for your planning journey will help you to keep a positive mindset about it. You don’t have to do everything perfectly right away and that it’s okay to make mistakes. Truly, there’s not a right or a wrong way – you just have to do what works for you. Focus on progress, not perfection.

As you go along this planning journey, I hope that you will celebrate your planning successes, no matter how small. Planning can be challenging and that any progress towards your goals is worth celebrating. Go ahead and give yourself a shout out in our Chaos Coordinator Community when you have planning successes to celebrate! I will cheer right along with you! Use positive self-talk and to focus on your strengths and successes rather than where you might’ve not done so well.

Before we go, I want to share a few tips on how to stay motivated throughout your planning journey. If you’ve followed me for a bit, then you probably know I love stickers in my planner, but I also know they aren’t for everyone. So create a planner that reflects your personal style and preferences, surround yourself with positive quotes and inspiration, and find an accountability partner to keep you on track. Our Chaos Coordinator Community is a great place to start if you are looking for an accountability buddy.

I hope this article helped you to start working towards having the mindset needed to successfully incorporate planning into your busy schedule and make it a regular part of your routine. My goal is to help you to be equipped with the knowledge and motivation needed to achieve your planning goals. Stay tuned for the next article on Planning Tools! Until next time, coordinate that chaos!
